AAA Teams (Spring and ALL-Star)

Tryouts for Miller Express Minor AAA (age 9-10) and Miller Express Major AAA (age 11-12) are early March at Yara Center. Players must attend at least 2 of the 3 sessions (preferably all 3). Cost is $25 per player, payable by e-transfer in advance or by cash at the door. Players must be registered for the season with Moose Jaw Little League.

MJ Little League will be putting together two AAA teams for Major division and two teams for Minor. These teams are considered our competitive teams.

The Major team will play in the Regina AAA league for the regular ball season of May and June.  Games will be played any day of the week and are spilt 50/50 between Regina and Moose Jaw.  The coaches of these teams will have practices that could be any day of the week as well.  During May and June these teams will typically attend 2-3 weekend tournaments.

The two Minor teams will be registered in the Regina AAA Little League program, playing league games on weekends.  Players on these teams have the option to play house league as well.  Practices will be held on opposing nights of Minor house league to accommodate.  These teams will also be registered in some weekend tournaments.

Following our regular season, we have an "All Star" season that runs for the month of July and into August long weekend.  After May 15, we will host tryouts for one Minor AAA All Star team and one Major AAA All Star team. If there is enough interest, AA teams will also be created. Anyone who has played Little League for at least 8 regular season games can try out for these teams, whether they played on the AAA team or regular season spring team in Moose Jaw.  Minor AAA All Stars will spend July practicing, going to tournaments and then ending off the season typically with a year end tournament in Alberta on August long weekend.  Major AAA All Stars will spend July practicing, attending 1-2 tournaments, play for the Prairies (provincial) title, and if successful go to the Canadian Little League Championship in August in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, NS.

Procedures and PolicieS

  1. Coaches Selection process and requirements
    1. All those interested in being a head coach for a Spring Season AAA team must submit an email application by the designated due date.  Summer Tournament AAA/AA team coaches must be an active coach in regular season play and submit an email application by the designated due date.
    2. MJLL Board of directors will review all applications and select head coaches for all teams.
    3. MJLL has the right to remove any and all coaches if their child does not make the team.  (Coaches’ players do not automatically make the team, this is based on evaluations)
  2. Evaluations
    1. All registered players in MJLL are eligible to attend try outs for their divisional Spring Season AAA team(s).
    2. Players that complete a minimum of 8 regular season games will be eligible to attend try outs for their divisional Summer Tournament AAA/AA team(s).
    3. MJLL will provide 3 try out dates and times for spring teams and up to 3 try outs for summer teams.
    4. Any interested players must attend a minimum of 2 try outs for spring and 1 for summer but are encouraged to attend all try out dates.
    5. The designated Head Coach for each team will be required to run the try outs. Stations will include the following:
      1. 1- Pitching/Catching Station
      2. 1- Hitting Station
      3. 1- Fielding Station (infield and outfield)
(Coaches can also select to play a game if they choose)
  3. Evaluators
    1. MJLL will select 3 to 5 evaluators (these will be “baseball” people, former players or coaches within the community)
    2. Assigned coaches can select up to 3 additional personal evaluators.
    3. Players will be graded 1-5 based on abilities (pitching, catching, hitting, fielding and baseball ssense/awareness)
    4. ALL evaluators must have NO affiliation with any players trying out (this includes family or friends of players)
    5. People helping execute the drill stations ARE NOT evaluators.
  4. Team Selection Process
    1. A minimum of 12 players must be selected for each team based on availability and skill.
    2. A board member will compile the board evaluator’s evaluation numbers and establish a 15-man team based off the evaluation numbers. The 15 players that finish with the average top 15 scores will be listed 1 to 15, highest to lowest.
    3. The head coach will do the same as the board.
    4. The head coach and MJLL board members must agree on the top 9 players.  i.e. Coaches will be given a chance to explain their selections if there is a difference in the”1-9” list.  (ex. player’s attitude or past history with players or parents are examples of reasons why a player may not be selected. If MJLL board members and the head coach cannot come to a valid agreement or reason why a player is or is not selected for the team, that player may be added/removed after a board vote.
    5. The last 3 spots will be picked by the head coach, as long as they are players within the top 15.
    6. All teams will be posted on www.mjlittleleague.com and Facebook promptly upon completion of team selection.
  5. Players Expectations
If a player is to commit to a AAA team, it must be understood by the player and parents that there is an expectation of almost 100% commitment. The goal of these teams is to field strong, competitive teams. In order for that to be successful we need players and parents to respect the time commitment these teams will demand.

Team Fees – It is typical for AAA teams to have additional fees in addition to the Little League fees already paid. The fees will cover items such as tournament fees, team apparel, etc.

MJLL and coaching staff have the right to suspend or remove a player from any team, at any time for disciplinary action (any suspension from regular season will carry over to the Summer Tournament season)
